Audemars Piguet is one of the first high-end watch brands to develop tourbillon watches. The CODE 11.59 series of floating tourbillon automatic chronographs are in the same line with this pioneering tradition of the brand. In the early 1980s, Georges Golay, then general manager of Audemars Piguet, challenged Serge Meylan, a young engineer newly recruited by the watchmaking workshop: to develop the world’s first watch equipped with a self-winding tourbillon movement. It must be able to fit in an ultra-thin case with a thickness of only 5.3 mm. Serge Meylan has lived up to expectations. His tourbillon is still one of the smallest (7.2 mm diameter) and lightest (0.123 grams) tourbillon devices in the world. After this watch was launched in 1986, it opened up a new development space for the fine watchmaking industry and set off the upsurge of tourbillon watches.
